Application Guidelines

​

The programme is open to UK-based teams of writer and/or director and producers working on genre films. Interested applicants must submit the following materials in one PDF document (in English):

- Application Form (click to download)
- Project Synopsis (1 page)
- Writer or Director’s Statement (up to 2 pages)
- Producer’s Note (up to 2 pages)
- Treatment (5-10 pages)
- Script (if available)
- Moodboard
- Biographies of the writer, director, and producer
- Production Company Profile
- Links to Previous Films

Selection Process

A total of 12 projects will be selected for the first part of the Lab that takes place online.

​

After the initial phase, 5 projects will be chosen to advance to the next round, which includes the Cardiff workshop and a Pop Up Film Residency abroad.

 

Participants and projects will be selected by an independent selection committee. If selected, both writer/director and producer are required to attend both the Online Workshop and the On-site Workshop.

Fees

Participation in the UK Next Wave Genre Lab is free of charge, and thanks to the support of the BFI Creative Challenge fund, a modest stipend will be provided to all participants.

Lab Part 1: Online Sessions
(September - October 2024)

September 5, 2024: Kick-off session and introduction. This session helps participants align with the programme's goals and prepares them for the upcoming challenges and opportunities. It brings together all 12 film projects represented by their directors, producers, and writers in a virtual environment to foster early collaboration and synergy.

September – October, 2024:

5 Masterclasses. On crafting and producing critically acclaimed genre films.

​

September 9 - 10, 2024: First round of individual script & production consultations. With script consultants Antoine Waked, Carlota Pereda, and producer consultants Andy Starke, Verena Grafe-Hoft and Patrick Anderson. 

​

October 9 - 10, 2024: Second round of individual script & production consultations. These sessions serve as a collaborative platform where mentors provide guidance, assess project needs, and offer insights to refine and advance the projects.

October 25, 2024: Deadline to submit updated materials. Participants submit their updated materials based on their learnings from the first part of the Lab. The pedagogical team will then select 5 projects to advance to the next phase.

Lab Part 2: Onsite Workshop 
(November 2024)

November 1, 2024: Announcement of the 5 projects advancing to the second part of the Lab.

November 24 - 28, 2024:

Intensive Workshop in Cardiff.

November 24: Arrivals and consultations

with mentors.

November 25 - 26: Consultations with mentors.

November 27: Pitching & matchmaking day.

November 28: Departures.

Lab Part 3: Pop Up Film Residencies
(January - March 2025)

​January 15, 2025 - February 2, 2025: Individual Pop Up Film Residencies abroad. The 5 selected projects will undergo individual 18-day residencies in locations such as Denmark, France, Greece, Lithuania, Lebanon, and Romania. The residencies will provide intensive mentorship sessions, individual working sessions, and participation in local networking events.
